Mid Devon Cyclist Nick Makin Victorious in Belgium along with a busy weekend of racing in the UK!!
Local rider Nick Makin has kicked off his racing block in Europe with a win at the Evergem Kermesse in Belgium. Makin will compete in a few more races before linking up with the Mid Devon Cycling Club team in France to participate in the prestigious Vire race.
Mid Devon Team Heads to Vire
This year’s Mid Devon team for the Vire race includes Mick Makin, George Watch, Ben Meek, James Pearcy, Charlie Meredith, and Shaun Davey. The team will be managed by Andy Hitchens and supported by mechanic Simon Aske.
The Totnes Vire race, held annually since 1974, celebrates the twinning of Totnes and Vire, France. It’s one of the longest-running races in the UK cycling calendar. You can learn more about the race’s history here: [Totnes Vire History].

Mid Devon Cyclists Shine at Shutt Velo Rapide Hitters Crits
The Torbay Velopark came alive this past weekend with the Shutt Velo Rapide Hitters Crits Rd 1, marking the start of the senior racing season. Mid Devon Cycling Club (MDCC) riders were out in force, putting on a strong showing across multiple categories.
E/1/2/3 Race:
- James Williams took a win in the E/1/2/3 category, showcasing his early-season form.
- Clubmates Julian Pittock (4th), Will Kelly (6th), James Pearcy (11th), and Shaun Davey (12th) also impressed with their performances.
Masters Races:
Several MDCC riders opted to double up and compete in both the E/1/2/3 and Masters races.
- In the Masters race, Julian Pittock continued his winning ways, securing the top spot.
- James Williams (4th) and Andrew Hitchens (8th) further bolstered the MDCC presence in this category.
3/4 Race:
The 3/4 race saw Joshua Snow finish a commendable 4th place, followed closely by Andrew Hitchens in 5th. Shaun Davey rounded out the MDCC finishers in this category with a 9th place result.
Mid Devon Juniors Fight Hard at Tiverton National Series
The Tiverton National Series Junior Road Races saw two Mid Devon Cycling Club riders tackle the demanding 73-mile course against a strong national field.
From the starting gun, the pace was fierce, pushing the peloton to its limits. Both Mid Devon riders, Ben Meek and George Watch, displayed excellent race positioning throughout.
Coming down to the final sprint finish, Meek put in a strong showing, securing an impressive 18th place finish. Watch also dug deep, crossing the line in a solid 30th place.
This challenging race showcased the talent and determination of the Mid Devon juniors. Their ability to handle the intense pace and compete against top national riders bodes well for their future performances.
Mid Devon Shreds at South West MTB XC Series
The Mid Devon Cycling Club’s off-road crew made a strong showing at the South West MTB XC Series race held at Woodies Bike Park in Cornwall.
Female Juvenile rider Lauren Fox displayed impressive skills, securing a well-deserved 2nd place finish. Lara Dix, competing in the Female Youth category, also took home 2nd place, showcasing her talent on the challenging course.
The Open Juvenile category saw Mid Devon riders dominate the podium. Matt Holmes claimed a hard-fought 2nd place, while James Alan battled his way to a close 3rd place finish.
These results highlight the depth of talent within the Mid Devon CC off-road team. Their dedication and skill are sure to propel them to further success in upcoming races.
