Roy Hopkins
It’s with great sadness that we share the news that Roy Hopkins passed away peacefully on Saturday morning. Roy was a stalwart of the club during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s competing Nationally for the Mid Devon. Perhaps his greatest result was winning stage 8 of the 1962 Tour of Britain from Northampton to Skegness 102 miles in 3 hrs 30 minutes an average speed of over 29mph which still stands as the record today !
Roy loved club life, training rides and racing – the harder the better and earned the nickname “Iron Man” in the cycling press. When he retired from racing Roy stayed connected with the sport by becoming a British Cycling official and could be regularly seen at events in the region.
Best wishes to Roy’s family from all at Mid Devon CC
