Wheal Jane Cycle Circuit Update
This message is from Rod James ref the Wheal Jane Cycle Circuit in Cornwall
A chance to visit and try out the circuit.
Sunday the 27th November 10.30 to 2.30
This is an invitation to all cyclists to visit Wheal Jane circuit and have a ride.
It will be set out more or less as it will be when we use it for racing.
It would be great to see groups of riders from all clubs, build into their Sunday ride, a visit to try out the circuit and see what a fantastic development this is for Cornwall cycling.
Update November 2016
It was about a year ago that we launched the Crowdfunding scheme and successfully raised the money required to proceed with the development of the Wheal Jane cycle circuit.
This project has always been about creating a facility that can support the development of cycling throughout Cornwall and the south west, over the next ten to twenty years. Therefore, it seemed important to get it right before the launch of the circuit. It has been a busy year sorting the “risk assessment” out and planning the purchase of the necessary kit to support the circuit and racing.
We are now in the “end game” of that process and have started the planning needed to open the circuit for the 2017 season.
We are taking delivery this weekend, of the 120 barriers purchased at a cost of £4300, the container is in place to store equipment, a set of donated, handheld radios to be collected and a signing on trailer is in place. We have also purchased a mobile toilet block at a cost of £3500 (plus VAT). That should be in place within the next week.
Still lots of work to do
We still have to sort out how to manage the preparation of the circuit. Although a major headache has been resolved by Wheal Jane, who have agreed to use their manpower and machinery to put out and take down the 120 barriers needed for each event.
Promotions for 2017
We have a commitment from One and All Youth Academy to promote a youth series. Penzance Wheelers and One and All Cycling will promote a short adult series of races during 2017. Dates are being sorted by Andy Parker from BC as we speak and will be promoting those through the BC online system when dates are fixed.
More help needed
We still need others to step forward to help with the promotion of events. Wheal Jane has further capacity but we need clubs and individuals to support this development by promoting events. We realise for some it may be a step in to the unknown so we are very happy to help and “hold your hand” if you wish to promote but are anxious about doing it on your own.
Without the support of Wheal Jane Holdings we would be looking at a very bleak future for youth cycling in Cornwall and a very limited future for adults. Wheal Jane have been extraordinarily helpful clearing a number of the issues that complicated the “risk assessment” and refurbishing not just the required area of rough gravel, but also an area of concrete that had a number of potholes. They have also been generous with their time and energy.
Support has also come from Goulding Electronics and Dales Motors, what we need now is a significant contribution form the cycling community.
